The program will work in collaboration with the Hasekura League - a Japanese Studies network founded by Tohoku University with universities in Europe - to facilitate academic exchange and mobility between students and faculty, at affiliated institutions. Ahead of the first admissions, the First Tohoku Conference on Global Japanese Studies will be held on December 14-16, at Kawauchi Campus. This international conference aims to provide scholars of Japanese Studies the opportunity to exchange ideas, thus fostering the possibility of further collaboration. The conference will bring together students and researchers from a range of ages, nationalities and disciplines. Date: December 14-16, 2018: Venue: Multidisciplinary Research Building (International Humanities) (MAP) Conference Topic The Meiji Restoration Revisited: Culture, Religion and the State. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration, this conference aims to reconsider the Meiji Restoration from a cultural perspective and examine the intersections between cultural and religious change against political and legal reforms, while placing these in the overall context of global history. Working sessions will be held parallel to the topic sessions. These will focus on broader issues related to Japan in the fields of humanities and social sciences. Working groups include a focus on Japanese Society and its Challenges - Historical Background and Perspectives. Keynote Speakers Professor James E.
